Since iPhone 3.0 about to be released I thought I would post my opinion on what the iPhone is missing feature wise.

  1. A universial location for all apps to store files. Each app has it own file storage location making it a pain for the end user. If their was one universal location for all apps to store files it would be easier to download a text file using an FTP program and edit that file and post it to the web.
  2. The capability to use any song on the iPhone as a ring tone. My old Motorola Razor could do this why can’t the iPhone?
  3. The ability to record video. You should be able to capture a video and then upload it to YouTube or your MobileMe account.
  4. The ability to transfer files using Bluetooth. Once again my old Motorola Razor could do this why can’t my iPhone.

Now that you know what I think is missing, here is a list of things to come in iPhone 3.0.

  • MMS
  • Subscription bases apps
  • In app purchases
  • Peer to peer conductivity
  • Better accessories Support
  • Push Notification
  • Cut, Copy and Paste
  • Send multiple photos in an email
  • Landscape keyboard in all iPhone key applications
  • Forward and Delete single or multiple SMS messages
  • Voice Memos recording
  • Share Calendars
  • Stocks app improvements
  • Search in all iPhone key applications
  • Spotlight search app
  • Notes sync
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • Improved features for Safari
  • More parental controls
  • Over 100 new features in total!!!

Reuters is reporting that McAfee and Symantec are working on software for the iPhone.

McAfee is developing security software for the iPhone and Mac computer, DeWalt said, in addition to technology it supplies to protect Apple computers against viruses.

Symantec, the No. 1 software security maker, is looking at developing a backup service that would protect data on the iPhone and allow users to use the device to access information stored on their PCs or on the Web, said Symantec Senior Vice President Rowan Trollope.

I just wonder how long until we start hearing about anti-virus software for the iPhone.

Stanford University announced on Monday said its Free iPhone Application Programming course has been downloaded more than  1 million times since it was uploaded to iTunes U.

Free videos of Stanford’s wildly popular course on creating applications for the iPhone and iPod touch have now been downloaded a remarkable million times from Stanford’s site on iTunes U in the iTunes Store.

“This is the fastest any course on iTunes U has reached one million downloads,” said Jason Ediger, Apple’s director of iTunes U and Mobile Learning. “iTunes U has proven to be a very effective and popular way to share this course with anyone interested in creating iPhone apps.”

And all of the million downloads have come in just seven weeks, since the course began on April 1.

Reaching 1 million downloads only took 7 weeks, and that is the fastest that any iTunes U course has reach that milestone.

The course has Apple engineers teaching the course, CS193P, to Stanford students in a small auditorium in Stanford’s Quad. The rest of the world, me included, downloaded the course from iTunes. You can also download PDF of the stills they show durning the lecture. You can also download the source code, syllabus, and course overview from the CS193P course website.
